Fourteen apply for State Education Commissioner: Will C. J. Huff be a finalist?

St. Louis Public Radio is reporting that 14 candidates have applied for the Commissioner of Education position which will open when Chris Nicastro retires at the end of the month.

We know one of those 14.

State Board of Education President (and. C. J. Huff buddy) Peter Herschend said the board reviewed the applications today and will announce five finalists on Monday.

At this point, the only person who announced publicly that he is seeking the position is Joplin R-8 Superintendent C. J. Huff.

Huff had a closed door meeting with Herschend at the Joplin R-8 Administration Building three days before it was announced that a nationwide search was going to be held for the position.

The nationwide search only occurred after many state media organizations and school superintendents criticized the board for being in such a rush to name someone to the position.

Promote the problem. Maybe there will objective media that will hold him accountable for the education of our students. Buildings, daycare, health centers and scoreboards are nice but let's focus on getting academic performance of the district improved. The decline is being hidden by attendance tricks and graduation rate adjustments.

Promoting the problem will at least give us a chance to bring in some that has an education first mentality.
