Graves: If Obama is serious about reforming immigration, he should enforce the laws

(From Sixth District Congressman Sam Graves)

The American people spoke loud and clear this past November in opposition to President Obama’s executive amnesty. By refusing to enforce our nation’s immigration laws, President Obama is not only ignoring the will of the American people, but our constitutional process as well.

Last year, President Obama announced his plan to disregard current immigration laws by allowing as many as 5 million illegal immigrants to remain in the United States – and even receive work permits. By doing so, the President has granted what amounts to amnesty for millions of people who entered our country illegally. Even worse, the President is ignoring our Constitution by acting on his own, rather than with Congress.

These actions reward those who have cheated the system and punish those who followed the law by going through the legal immigration process. I strongly oppose this amnesty order and the President’s attempt to not only bypass the legislative process, but the American people as well.

That is why the House took action to reverse the President’s unconstitutional order. I am proud to have supported this legislation that fully defunds his executive order and reins in his attempt to expand executive power. We are a nation of laws and no one is above the rule of law – not even the President.

If President Obama is serious about reforming our immigration process, he should enforce the current laws on the books and work with Congress to strengthen the defense of our borders.
