Tonight is Schieffer's last night
Those of you who have not had the opportunity to see the incredibly literate, human approach Bob Schieffer has brought to the CBS Evening News after replacing the embattled Dan Rather need to watch tonight. This will be his last night at the helm.
Under Schieffer, the CBS newscast has been the only one that has gained in the ratings, which should prove that you don't have to have a pretty face and be under age 50 (Schieffer is nearing 70) to attract an audience. Schieffer's respect for his audience, and for his reporters, has been evident in each program.
Schieffer, who will be replaced next week by Katie Couric, took the job on an interim basis, never wanting it full-time, and has not only kept the ship afloat, but has enabled the network's news department to rise above the low point it reached at the end of the Rather era.

Randy, you and I must have not been watching the same Schieffer....or didn't you notice how, at the end of each reporter's story, Schieffer took his blade, and in his best grandfatherly voice, stuck it to someone (usually the President or a Republican) and then twisted....with a little chuckle in his voice that literally screamed out "I'm just asking a question!"
I thought you were a better "reader" between the lines since you spend your time knowing all the other reporters actions and motives - at least you recognize those that you disapprove of...
I, for one, will miss Bob Schieffer's refreshingly "old school" approach to the news. For the last few weeks, it's been a must-see in my family. Almost reminds me of the days when "Uncle" Wally Cronkite was a commentator. Sizzle is fine, but every now and then, I like a good steak.
I miss Bob Phillips and the Phillips Files.......those were the good old days!!
I'm going to miss Schieffer too.
In reply to first anonymous... I guess you haven't noticed that Bush and the republicans have basically had complete and uninterrupted power over the last almost 6 years and they've made a horrible mess of it. It's past time they were face with some serious questions and forced to be accountable because they apparently aren't going to be accountable unless they are forced.
If the democrats had done this badly I would want them to be held accountable as well, but the fact is the democrats didn't. The republicans own this disaster.
