Joplin R-8 Board awards furniture bid to German firm without discussion, without mention

If you expected the Joplin R-8 Board of Education to discuss the awarding of a $59,000 no-bid contract for furniture for East Middle School and Irving and Soaring Heights elementary schools to a German firm, forget it.

It didn't happen.

The bid, which went to the same company V/S, that paid for half of what turned out to be a four-day vacation for Assistant Superintendent Angie Besendorfer and DIrector of Instruction Jason Cravens, was never even mentioned during the meeting.

It was included as part of the consent agenda, a collection of items that do not require a discussion, and was passed, as usual, by a 7-0 vote.

More information about the "bid" and the vacation can be found at this link.

Gee, I'm reeling from the shock! Our district do something overly expensive, unethical, and against the will of the public? Oh, I'm surprised...

How fair is that to the students in the other schools who don't have besendorfer tested ergonomic furniture upon which to perch their behinds? Will their test scores suffer? However did any of us ever learn a thing before technology and ergonomic furniture? Thank goodness we've been saved by the wise ones. Never mind that the students appear to be learning less every year according to the data. Bessie the Wise knows how to read it more deeply and she says we're all just wonderful. That should be a good enough endorsement for anyone!!

I'm a product of this district, and I've been fairly successful, but I just wish I could have learned more by sitting on nice furniture! My life would be completely different right now.
