Jury can't come to decision on death penalty for man who kidnapped, raped, murdered Hailey Owens

At least one person on a Platte County jury was not convinced that Craig Michael Wood, 49, should receive the death penalty for kidnapping, raping, and murdering 10-year-old Hailey Owens of Springfield on February 18, 2014.

Since a unanimous decision has to be made in order for a jury to mete out the death penalty, the decision will have to be made by the judge and that will not happen until January.

After four hours of deliberation today, the jury announced it could not come to a unanimous decision.

Judge Thomas Mountjoy will make his ruling on whether Wood will be sentenced to death in January, when he decides on Wood's motion for a new trial.
