The total sales tax is already at 8.075%. Joplin has always been a low cost of living area - if sales tax keeps going up - then Joplin will loose its advantage. If you buy a car for $20,000 the sales tax is $20,000 x .08075 = $1,615 (A 1/2% sales tax increase would add $100).

What about the cost savings proposed by Leslie Hasse (clothing allowances for detectives, taking cars home, reducing number of people on a fire truck) - have any of these been implemented?

Anytime a tax is proposed with an expiration date - it is ALWAYS EXTENDED. The logic is that "you are used to paying it". What will happen is that we will end up with a 1% safety tax forever.
