East Newton High School officials received high praise in the editorial section of today's Springfield News-Leader.
"Thank goodness for administrators at East Newton High School in Granby for showing that compassion and common sense still exist in public education."
The editorial was written in reference to East Newton's decision to welcome new student Karen Meinke...and her guide dog...with open arms. Miss Meinke has a condition which has caused her hips to deteriorate and she has difficulty walking so she needs a guide dog who is trained to brace her when she is falling.
Pierce City school officials said no to the guide dog, according to the editorial, and even told Miss Meinke that she didn't need it.
At East Newton, not only was Miss Meinke accepted, but when she and her guide dog were introduced at an assembly, they received a standing ovation.
