Three state senators, including Gary Nodler, R-Joplin, said they plan to ask state voters to change the constitution so schools cannot challenge legislative spending decisions in court.
The three issued a statement, according to an article by Bob Watson of the Jefferson City News-Tribune shortly after members of the Committee for Educational Equality announced it would continue its lawsuit attempting to equalize funding for Missouri schools.
Nodler, Charlie Shields, R-St. Joseph, and Matt Bartle, R-St. Joseph, said their proposal was necessary because they, as elected representatives, are responsible to the people, while judges are not, according to the News-Tribune article.
Nodler said,"It is clear that this lawsuit is not about a new and fair school funding formula, but is about piling up legal fees for school lawsuit lawyers."
The list of school districts suing the state includes the following area schools: Avilla, Carl Junction, Carthage, Nevada, Webb City, Jasper, McDonald County, Monett, Mount Vernon, Seneca, East Newton, Diamond, and Cassville.
