Six candidates, four Republicans and two Democrats, have emerged as possibilities to succeed the late Larry Gene Taylor, R-Shell Knob, as 29th District state senator, according to today's Monett Times.
As mentioned earlier this week in The Turner Report, former State Representative Nolan McNeill, a Democrat, who is currently the chairman of the Barry County Democratic Committee and the 29th District Senate District Committee, plans to run, as does Thomas Capelli, Blue Eye, who ran against Taylor and lost in the last Senate election.
The Joplin Globe reported earlier this week that Sen. Taylor's widow, Gay Taylor, has asked to be considered. Three others have also, according to the Times. One, Jack Goodman, Mount Vernon, is currently serving as 132nd District state representative. Judy Berkstresser is Stone County clerk, and served three terms as 141st District state representative before leaving to run for county clerk. The other candidate mentioned in the Times article, was Barry County Presiding Commissioner Cherry Warren.
The Republican Committee will choose its candidate Aug. 22, the article said. The Democratic Committee has not yet set a date. Sen. Taylor died of cancer last month after serving one year of a four-year term. Whoever succeeds him will serve the remaining three years.
