I was just checking out the blog of one of my students from last year, Arielle Ideker, who will be a freshman at Joplin High School this fall.
She asks a thought-provoking question: "How is it that you can get away with a terrorist attack in the U.S. and yet when you do it in London, it takes about a month for the people responsible to be caught?"
Of course, quite a few of the people who were responsible for 9-11 are no longer on this earth, but people like Osama bin Laden have been at large for nearly four years. Thankfully, we were able to get Saddam Hussein, who had nothing to do with the terrorist attacks.
Tell your student that the same people are behind the attacks in London and are still at large (see Al Zawahiri statement yesterday). The only reason they caught anyone is because their bombs didn't work. Otherwise they would have been dead...just like the 9-11 and 7-7 attackers.
ReplyDeleteWhile you're at it, remind the youngster that our police actually prevented a handful of attacks on New York City prior to the first attack on the world trade center in 1995. Oh yeah, the scum that pulled off that attack were rounded up, tried and convicted. Nobody ever remembers the good.
Yeah but, we were able to twart other attacks and arrest and convict the people responsible for the first attack solely because it was treated as a police matter and our attention was not diverted by a military exercise in the pursuit of oil.
ReplyDeleteNot to mention the fact the England is an ISLAND.
ReplyDeleteI thought this one might get a good little discussion going.
ReplyDeleteWhat a weak argument "The pursuit of oil" is. You have to come up with something better than that. There are some arguments to be made but that is not one.
ReplyDeleteAs far as finding Bin Laden is concerned, it's tough to find one person on this planet. The real test of our war on terror is the number of attacks in the U-S since 9-11. Hmm....that number is ZERO. Not bad considering it's NOT a police action providing that security.
Or maybe it's that our president wants to feel in control and let things slip by so he can feel like the big man by causing a war we didn't need to happen anyway, which he provoked. Which he might have known was coming his way, and could have stopped it, but if he caused a war, he could tell our country we were strong fighters and wouldn't give up, while a great loss of family members and friends were making America weak with memories from 9/11. Or maybe I'm wrong.
