Grass roots support lifting Spradling, Bartosh

The difficulties faced by Jasper County Presiding Commissioner Chuck Surface in his reelection campaign apparently do not include raising money.
Even as the former state representative awaits word from Lawrence County Prosecuting Attorney Robert George on what charges he will face in connection with a traffic stop in Joplin last Friday, two contributors anted up maximum $650 donations, according to documents filed Aug. 1 with the Missouri Ethics Commission.
The documents show Nutra Blend, the Moark based subsidiary in Neosho, and Kay Wells, Joplin, made the contributions.
Surface's eight days before election report. filed July 31, showed he had $8,089.74 on hand, receiving $2,350 in contributions during July. He only spent $120.
Contributors included Conservative Committee of Southwest Missouri, Joplin, $650; Realtors Political Action Committee of Missouri, $300; Consultant Associates, Carthage, $650.

Carthage businessman John Bartosh's eight-day report, filed three days late, showed he received $6,889 in July and spent $7,135.78, leaving him with $563.64.
A party held July 22 accounted for most of the money, according to the disclosure statement.
"It was a party food, music, fun and a bucket or two for donations," the statement said. The party accounted for $6,289, including $1,754 in the buckets.
Top donors for Bartosh in July included: Collins, Webster & Rouse, Joplin, $500; Jordan Disposal Service, Joplin, $650; Roger Hines, Asbury, $650; U. S. Assets Recovery, Joplin, $650; Brian Jordan, Joplin, $650; Blackcat Trucking, Joplin, $650.
Bartosh's expenditures included $3,791 to KOAM, $1,155 to KODE and $1,155 to KSNF for advertising.

In his eight days before election report, Carthage attorney James Spradling reported receiving $6,354 in July and spending $10,286, leaving his campaign with $93.35.
Spradling's campaign, like Bartosh's, had a grass roots flavor to it, with $4,584 coming from contributors giving less than $100. Only one contributor, former Carthage resident Dean Peterson of Kansas City, gave as much as $500.
According to the report, Spradling spent $1,385 for KODE advertising for July, $1,015.75 for KSNF in July, $1,300.50 for KOAM advertising in July, $975.75 for KSN advertising for August, and $1,100.75 for KOAM advertising for August.

If a DUI made someone unfit for public office, half of the politicians in America would be out of a job.

  2. I don't recall saying it made him unfit for public office. My references were to the bad timing of the situation. On the other hand, it was a case of extremely poor judgment, and driving while intoxicated is an illegal activity.

Maybe the title is sarcasm. I don't see any evidence here of grass roots support lifing Spradling, Bartosh. Their both supported by other politicians seeking to advance their own agendas. Doesn't seem too grass roots to me.
