The twin titans of holding grudges, senators Gary Nodler, R-Joplin, and Delbert Scott, R-Lowry City, moved one step closer to having their bill hampering the ability of independent candidates to mount campaigns become a law.
The Senate Financial and Governmental Operations Committee, with Scott as chairman, sent the bill to the Senate with a "do pass' recommendation today.
Both Nodler and Scott had to stave off challenges from independent candidates in 2006. Nodler defeated Kim Wright of Joplin, while Scott won over former Hickory County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Holzknecht.
Nodler told the Joplin Globe he filed the bill for the following reason:
"The way it is now is an invitation to political mischief and could allow parties to organize phony independent candidates to tilt the outcome of the general election," he said. "There’s less of a chance of that if everyone has to identify themselves at the same time. But the timing is the only difference. It (the bill) changes nothing else on the procedure by which an independent gains a place on the ballot."
As far as I can see, the only political mischief is when two powerful senators start writing laws to combat problems that do not even exist.
This bill will really help out the citizens of Missouri. I knew something was fishy when Claire McCatskill and Jim Skill both ran as independent candidates last year.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see the day when we vote for a candidate based on their positions on issues rather than their political party. I wonder how much better we would all be if that were the case. We can't get better as a nation until we get better as an individual.
ReplyDeleteI did vote for the candidate based on his position, or lack of, on issues and yet the moron named Nodler still got elected.
ReplyDeleteI'm not voting any more, the system is broke and I am fed up.
