Sen. Jack Goodman's bill requiring Missouri school districts to start school later in the year received a "do pass" recommendation from the House Select Committee on Student Achievement following a hearing today.
At least the bill was heard in an education committee. The Senate placed the bill in the Tourism Committee, which makes sense since the people pushing the hardest for the change have been those in the tourism industry.
The bill calls for schools to start no earlier than 10 calendar days prior to the first Monday in September. Any school district wanting to start earlier has to announce a special public meeting for that purpose, then have the earlier start approved by a majority vote of the board. The same procedure would have to be followed each year, according to the bill.
