Former New York Yankee third baseman, and Alba High School graduate Clete Boyer had only one regret about his highly successful major league career: He never had the opportunity to play on the same team with his older brother Ken, according to his obituary in the New York Times:
"As a kid, I always fantasized about us being on the Cardinals together, him at third base and me at shortstop,” Clete told Dave Anderson of The New York Times in 1982. ”The two of us on the same team. But it never worked out."
Love your new format!
ReplyDeleteRandy -- I'm glad you presented this piece on Clete Boyer. The Gannett clones at the Springfield News-Leader apparently don't even know that the Boyers are from the Ozarks. They ran a tiny story about Clete's death but the only area connection they mentioned was that he once played for Kansas City. Pitiful! Of course, now that you've put up this story, Messenger may find it and clue the N-L sports department. And they'll pretend they knew it all along.
ReplyDeleteHopefully, if they get information from the New York Times obit, they will correct the mistake. The Times has Clete Boyer born in Cassville, while he was actually born in the tiny Jasper County community of Cossville.
