Some thoughts on Weston Powell and those who die before their time

I never had Weston Powell in class, though I remember talking to him numerous times in the hallway during passing time (usually trying to get him to move on to class).

It is still hard to lose anyone from South's extended family, and though it has been more than a year since Weston, whose body was discovered today in Spring River, attended our school, he like the others who have graced these halls, will always be a part of South.

When I was at The Carthage Press, I was always the one who covered stories involving the deaths of young people and it never gets any easier. The deaths have ranged from the murder of eight-year-old Doug Ringler of Carthage in 1993, to numerous drunk driving deaths, to young people whose lives were cut short by leukemia or other diseases.

During my time in teaching, only one such incident has occurred prior to Weston's death. During the 2001-2002 school year at Diamond, we suffered the loss of seventh grader Kelsey Anderson, a girl who I was fortunate enough to have had in my creative writing class for one quarter during her sixth grade year. I still think of Kelsey when I drive past the area where her trailer home once stood.

The good people at The Bridge are offering ministers and counselors to help those who have trouble dealing with Weston Powell's death.

It is hard to understand why someone so young was taken.

My prayers are with Weston's family and friends.

Weston was not a friend but an acquaintance of mine and I made fun of him a lot. I do feel bad for this. Its too late to take it back now. I am shaken and deeply impacted by his death, nevertheless. Weston, you are missed.

Weston Powell was a fixture in my neighborhood- our house is between his and Jordan Kuhns. My daughter Kendra was a good friend of his. I must give Kudos to the sherrif department in KS- they did not stop looking. He was a good kid and a lot of fun to be around. This tragedy will impact these kids for the rest of thier lives. May godspeed everyone healing.

i never really met Weston but by the way people describe him he was a loving and caring person. He will always be in everybody's hearts and memories. Everybody has to remember that even though Weston isn't here with us he is in a better place looking over all of us. And don't forget to remember him. This all happened so sudden but we love you Weston and we will never forget you. All my prayers go to his family and friends for the lose of a loving and caring young boy. I was very close to Weston, and words cannot describe how hard this has been. Weston was the best friend anyone could ever ask for. Always smiling (unless he tried to bum a dollar off you and you said no), always laughing, and always happy. His family is amazing and I am so glad I got to spend time with them throughout the week of the search. Weston--I love you, and I miss you.

June 3 was the worst day of my life.
Everyday after that Sunday up until Thursday night I had the same exact dream every night.
I was just hanging out in front of my apartment building and I would see him coming up the street with that loving smile he constantly had on his face. And he would just say "I was just messing with you!." I miss him more and more everyday. I loved that kid cause he was the only person who ever acted like he cared. And the only person who didn't let things get him down.
I respected him so much for everything he had given me.
    I love him.

Ive known weston since first grade. Its been over a year and still not real to me that he is gone. Everything you hear is true, he was a great person. Always able to put a smile on your face no matter what. Never in a bad mood, unless he couldnt land a trick or couldnt find a dollar. Weston, i know you're in a better place but we all miss you so much. Cant wait till i see you again.

i knew weston for about 5 years! we lived a few blocks from eachother. we used to skate all day and hang out at Taco Bell or McDonalds with a few other friends. but i moved and rarely saw him anymore. the last time i saw him, he asked me if i wanted to go to a near by school cause he wanted to grind this big ol rail. but i didn't go. i regret every day. he was like the brother i never had! weston, bro, you will be sorely missed, -Chip-

This is Humberto. Weston was one of my best friends he was like a brother to me. We pretty much grew up next to each other. i knew him pretty much all my life. I still remember all the stupid stuff we used to do like going to Mcdonalds and sitting there forever eating a bunch of free food his sister would get us then going skating. He will always be remembered and his memory lives on I'll be sure to tell my son what a good friend he was. Not a day goes by that I don't think of him. He was fun to be around always put me in a good mood when I was feeling down. I can truly say he's the best friend a person could ask for. Weston you know I love you and I'm so thankful that I went by your house the day before I left and got to talk to you and give you a hug. But I never would have expected that to be the last time I saw you but I'll see you again I promise. I love you and I miss you very much still.
