Some members of Congress are putting themselves on the record as opposing their upcoming $4,400 pay increases, but not Seventh District Congressman Roy Blunt:
Defending the raise, Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., said, "Every member has some obligation to the institution for the compensation to, as much as possible, keep pace with inflation. I think this should be as good a job when I leave it as it was when I took it."
Other Missourians did not agree with that view:
This is the people's money, and we need to use it on their priorities," said Republican Rep. Sam Graves of Missouri, co-sponsor of a bill to prevent the raise. "Increasing the pay of members of Congress is not their priority."
Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, said she'd back a similar measure in the Senate.
"I don't think Congress should get a raise," she said. "I think it would be a nice thing to tell the American people that we could go a couple years without a raise."
The pay increase would lift salaries to $169,600 annually.
Raising salaries to keep pace with inflation, eh? Funny how so many of them were adamantly opposed to raising the federal minimum wage. I guess only members of Congress have trouble paying the bills because of inflation.
ReplyDeletePerhaps they should work for $1. per year. Then they would be overpaid. They can carry off enough under the table to live well. Poor guys...makes me want to cry.
ReplyDeleteBefore this pay raise Blunt was going to have to get a job at McDonalds to keep up with the bills.
ReplyDeleteThe faculty and staff at MSSU have gone 2-3 years now without any raise, and many with reductions in pay. All this was hailed as brilliant fiscal management on the part of president "I need more personal staff!" Speck! Southern's president, paid 50% MORE than the governor of Missouri, earns it best by doing least, evidently.
ReplyDeleteWhen guys like Speck and Blunt are so stubbornly ignorant of how most working people live, the have NO RIGHT to be in position of authority over anyone or anything!
Dump 'em out on the street with the rest of the garbage!
