Governor Matt Blunt is scheduled to sign the Castle Doctrine (or Frontier Justice) bill Tuesday, according to Jason Rosenbaum at the Columbia Tribune Political Blog.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Jack Goodman, R-Mount Vernon, with its running mate on the House side offered by Rep. Marilyn Ruestman, R-Joplin, solves a problem that never existed in the first place.
People have always had the right to defend themselves if they believe their lives are in danger, but bill proponents made it appear that there have been a host of lawsuits against law-abiding citizens who were only trying to protect themselves and their property.
Goodman acknowledged to Dave Catanese of KY3 Blog that no such lawsuits had occurred in southwest Missouri. I have repeatedly challenged anyone to prove that such a lawsuit has ever taken place in Missouri. So far, no one has found one, though there is not much reason to since the bill has already passed.
I also still question Ms. Ruestman's early statements that this bill came as a result of numerous requests from constituents. I was unaware that the national office of the National Rifle Association was located in Ms. Ruestman's district.
