Ms. Greer continues to dig into the story of former Neosho police officer Justin Pickup, 23, who turned himself in Saturday to face misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of a child, for allegedly buying the vodka that led to the death of 16-year-old Kassie Schenck in a one-car accident Dec. 21.
In a story posted on the website and set for Tuesday's print edition, Miss Schenck's parents say the Neosho police had warned that Pickup had been hanging around Miss Schenck:
Karen Cahalan, Schenck's mother, contended that her ex-husband, David Schenck, Kassie’s father, told a supervisor in the Neosho Police Department to "keep your police officer away from my daughter" at least six months before the crash.
David Schenck said Monday that his attorney advised him not to talk about the case. He did say that he spoke on the phone in February 2006 with a supervisor at the Neosho Police Department regarding his concerns about Pickup hanging around his daughter.
"I'd like to get everything out. There has been no justice by keeping my mouth shut," David Schenck said Monday.
