A detention hearing for the woman charged by the U. S. government with joining with Rep. Nathan Cooper, R-Cape Girardeau to commit immigration fraud, has been delayed until Thursday, according to records from the U. S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.
The government wants Omega Penalosa Paulite to stay behind bars until her trial, claiming in court documents that she is "a serious risk to threaten or injure a prospective witness," "a serious risk to obstruct justice," and "a serious" flight risk.
Cooper, an immigration attorney, as well as a state representative, pleaded guilty last week to the fraud charges and will be sentenced Oct. 19.
