Disasters like Saturday's tornado prove the importance and necessity of the media in today's society. People look to newspapers, television, radio, and the Internet to provide information and context.
Today's Joplin Globe, in addition to numerous stories on efforts of communities to recover from the disaster, includes interviews with people from the Joplin R-8 School District, who were stunned by the loss of Franklin Tech teacher Kathy Rountree and Memorial Middle School student Clayton Rountree:
Clayton was a seventh-grader at Memorial Middle School. Principal Steve Gilbreth said many students talked to counselors to deal with Clayton’s death.
“He was a great, fun-loving little guy,” Gilbreth said. “He had a close circle of friends.”
His death hit the student body hard, said seventh-grader Ariel Aldrighetti.
“Lunch was so quiet today,” she said. “I know his friends miss him a lot."
