Dr. Jim Cummins, Wheaton superintendent, has signed on as the new assistant superintendent for the Carl Junction R-1 School District. He replaces Dr. David Stephens, who is the new superintendent for the Nevada R-1 School District.
Cummins previously served as high school principal in Diamond and as a teacher in the Neosho R-5 School District.
We didn't necessarily need a new assistant superintendent, but we surely need a NEW superintendent. The quality of education has gone down at CJ. It used to be that the kids from the high school took lots of honors all around the state for mathematics, biology, chemistry - but now the focus has gone too far into sports.
ReplyDeletePhil Cook's firing of basketball coach Lance Robbins still bothers me. It was ego-driven, and made absolutely no sense. If you talk to members of the R-1 Board of Education, they will say the same thing.
ReplyDeleteLet's look at the once highly regarded CJ achievement scores. At one time, the school had earned a reputation as a one of the most sccessful public schools in the immediate areas. Since Cook has taken over, the school is in disarray. Scores are way down (as eidenced in a recent article printed by the Globe. He doesn't understand why the scores have dropped, nor does he have the ability to lead and get them back up. The people in the community ha ve no faith in him, his personal conduct doesn't help in this area. Dr. Cummins is someone who will definitely benefit the district. If the board members are smart, they will look to move him up and Cook out very soon.
