Former Carthage Press lifestyles editor runs web operations for Ball State University
Continuing my occasional posts on people who at one time were involved in the print or broadcast media in the Joplin area, I noted recently that Nancy Prater, Carthage Press lifestyles editor from 1989 to 1993 is now web coordinator for Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.
Nancy has been the director of Ball State's successful effort to use such modern techniques as blogging and podcasting to increase student enrollment.
During her time at The Press, Nancy put together the best lifestyles page in the area and it was an integral part of the Press' success. Of course now, our area GateHouse newspapers have pretty much written off local lifestyles coverage in favor of canned news and non-local columns from GateHouse News Service.
In this time of crisis for local newspapers across the country, it is time to take a look at what worked in the past, and then find a way to make it fit in with today's technology. What we need are more Nancy Praters.

Let us also mention that she got her start in journalism by working for The Chart at Missouri Southern.
Congratulations, Nancy, on your position at Ball State. I've known her for more years than either of us would care to admit. Nancy has always been a go-getter, as well as one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. Nancy, your success is definitely deserved. Congrats again.
