It's open season on Bristol Palin.
I read three or four articles last night by reporters, who incredibly believe that because pregnant teenager Bristol Palin and her boyfriend were in the audience Wednesday night at the Republican National Convention that makes her fair game for the media.
One columnist actually wrote that at first he believed the teen's pregnancy story should be off limits but since she had paraded herself around in public, the gloves were off.
What a self-righteous hypocrite.
If I understand what the columnist was saying, and sadly, I do, he thought it was Bristol Palin's duty to stay home and hide in shame instead of being in the Twin Cities to support her mother when Sarah Palin accepted the GOP vice presidential nomination.
Is the media living in the 1950s? Unless Bristol Palin hides in the spare room or lives with an aunt and uncle in Ketchikan until the baby is born, she is saying, "Here I am, media, come get me."?
The media is trying to make this a story about hypocrisy when it clearly is not. What difference does it make if Sarah Palin believes in abstinence-based education and her daughter gets pregnant. It's a story if Sarah Palin says one thing and does another. I am sure Mrs. Palin still believes in abstinence-based education and wishes he daughter had held the same beliefs, but isn't this more a reflection of the kinds of problems thousands of families face every day...not a sign of hypocrisy.
The hypocrisy in this case belongs to the media...the same media who did not think John Edwards' infidelity was worth investigating, at a time when much of his presidential campaign success was based on his devotion to his wife as she suffered from cancer. Until Barack Obama entered the campaign, it was even money whether John Edwards or Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic presidential nominee, yet that story was not important to anyone...even though the National Enquirer had pretty convincing evidence over a year ago.
The media needs to examine themselves, but I am not anticipating that taking place until long after the current feeding frenzy has concluded. When it comes to Sarah Palin's political beliefs or her actions in office, those are fair game and should be covered thoroughly by the media
As for her daughter, this is a tough enough time for her. Please allow her to share in her mother's success story without being turned into a target.
As always Mr. Turner, very well said.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteThanks Randy..there are times the media transports me back to the early 1960's. I am astounded! There appears to be a double standard.
ReplyDeleteRandy, I so rarely agree with you, but you hit it dead on this time!
ReplyDeleteExactly right, Randy. It's hard not to say there's a bias in the media against Palin when these things keep happening.
ReplyDeleteEven I agree with RT - this time.
ReplyDeleteBristol Palin's pregnancy wouldn't have even been an issue if her mother wasn't a supporter of abstinence-only sexual education.
ReplyDeleteThe media has an obligation to take over whenever "community journalists" start blogging and saying that Sarah Palin's baby is actually Bristol's.
