If, as some pundits have suggested, the repeal of campaign contribution limits was designed to help Kenny Hulshof's race for governor, someone must have miscalculated.
Since the new rules went into effect Aug. 28, it has been Hulshof's opponent, Attorney General Jay Nixon, who has raised the most money in oversized contributions.
According to a 48-hour report filed today with the Missouri Ethics Commission, Nixon received $100,000 from the Eastern Missouri Laborers' Benevolent Fund, Bridgeton, $75,000 from the Western Missouri and Kansas District Laborers Council, Joplin; $25,000 from Strong Gardner & Bauer PC, Springfield; and $6,500 apiece from Davis D. Minton, president, Crowley Ridge Farm Ag Enterprises, Dexter; and Bradley Minton, Dexter.
That $213,000 makes Nixon the first candidate to rake in more than $2 million in $5,000+ contributions. Nixon has raised $2,024,150, with Hulshof only slightly behind him with $1,827,081.
This total of nearly four million dollars between the two candidates does not even take into account all of the contributions ranging from $1 to $4,999.99 received by Hulshof and Nixon during that time period.
