Joplin Tri-State Business will now be Joplin Tri-State Business Journal, according to an announcementmade by Editor Jeff Wells on the publication's website. Wells offers this assessment of the demise of the rival publication:
We never considered Joplin Business Journal as a direct competitor because they approached the market and publishing business news in a totally different fashion. JBJ ambitiously claimed to cover a 21-county area in the tri-state area. Meanwhile, Joplin Tri-State Business - launched in April 2006 - concentrated on serving the business communities in Joplin, Webb City, Carthage, Neosho, Miami, Okla., and Pittsburg, Kan.
JBJ's decision to try to serve every small town in the region kept the publication from paying attention to news important or of interest to a majority of the tri-state area's business leaders. Meanwhile, we worked to make sure our publication was the business news authority in those cities.
While we labored to maintain traditional journalism ethics and practices such as editorial independence, we heard stories of other publications blurring the lines between news and advertising operations. Our approach further distinguished Joplin Tri-State Business from Joplin Business Journal.
Ouch! Way to piss on the JBJ's grave, Wells. C
ReplyDeleteNo, Wells - the reason everyone referred to you as the Tri-State Business "Journal" is because most business publications have that word tacked onto the rear end of their name. And as for losing vision when Kanan left that was not the case, the lost item was hope. Content did reflect Don's efforts, but there's only so much you can do as a one man band. Attributing your name change to the sudden demise of a competitor makes your publication sound like a member of the jackal tribe most people understand the media to be.
ReplyDeleteSo....the Tri-State Business whatever is making new jobs in Joplin, Springfield, or are there any? I am not sure how you can take victory in a business closing the doors and more people loosing jobs. Wow! I don't support that.
