Add the Nevada R-5 Schools to those that require students participating in extracurricular activities to undergo random drug tests.
While I do work for a school district that has a similar policy in place, that does not make the idea any better. School board members who have voted for random drug testing have their hearts in the right place. It is hard to argue with a policy designed to save kids from drug abuse.
Unfortunately, this method is an invasion of the students' privacy, more likely to keep students from participating in the very activities that could help them curb or give up drug usage altogether, and we have absolutely no evidence that these programs are doing anything other than making school officials feel better and costing the taxpayers money.
