In addition to 18 awards received from the Missouri College Media Association (and noted in an earlier Turner Report post), the newspaper's hard-hitting editorials concerning the troubles at MSSU received top honors from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).
From the news release:
The Chart received word that it had bested Iowa State University for the Society of Professional Journalists’ Region 7 Award of Excellence for editorial writing. Region 7 includes all colleges and universities in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska.
According to the SPJ judges, The Chart’s entries were effectively crafted:
“Many proven effective opinion-writing techniques such as repetition, direct address, and strong, early calls to action in this series of editorials on the turmoil involving the university president,” they wrote.
Congratulations and kudos to The Chart and their adviser Professor Hanrahan! Their courageous reporting in the face of the top administrators' blatant attempts to intimidate and stifle them is an example to the rest of us.
ReplyDeleteWe who sit idly by while Speck and Kleindl dismantle the faculty and the university should take heart from The Chart and speak up! We, and the Chart, and the GLobe, and the Carthage Press, and the Turner Report, and WatchingMSSU.com need to keep shining the brightest of light on their sneaky tactics as well as their ill-considered initiatives!
Keep it up, Charterians! Give 'em hell!
