KSN, KODE facility featured in Broadcasting & Cable article

The new all-digital studios for KSN and KODE are featured in an article in Broadcasting & Cable, an industry magazine:

KSNF's previous facility was damaged when a broadcast tower collapsed on it during a May 2009 storm. The stations have already transitioned to their two new side-by-side main sets and control rooms in DMA No. 147.
"This facility represents a significant investment for Nexstar and reflects our commitment to our viewers in Joplin, Pittsburg, and the entire Four States Region," said Nexstar President/CEO Perry Sook. "With this new facility we are bringing KSNF and KODE under one roof, which will further improve efficiencies and productivity as a result of enhanced workflow capabilities."

So.....Merging two last place stations makes two better stations? If these two stations were so good, how can merging their efforts into one facility make them better? I get the new technology, but the culture hasn't changed. By merging these two fighting for last place organizations together, how can you expect anything other than a fight for last place? Both KSN and KODE use some form of voodoo ratings that they sell to their staffs as fact. Based on that magic, their success will likely be great, at least according to the Shamen, {I Mean Nexstar Robots,} who profess the success of their efforts. If they choose to subscribe to reality, the numbers will show their efforts are less than advertised. For too long management has mis-lead the staff of these stations into believing they were doing well in audience while they cut expenses, including merging the stations to balance their failing revenue. If you work for these stations and they will honestly tell you, ask when the last time the stations even met last year's revenue. Insurance allowed these stations to do what Nexstar could not afford to do and would not do before, merge these stations to more homonigize the product, and more importantly, reduce the cost to overcome the weakness of these two stations in the Joplin Market..
Best of luck to those riding the ship right down to the bottom of the sea!

Wow, why would the previous commentor be so upset about a T-V station getting a new building?

My thought is what happens when a severe t-storm takes out the power serving both stations? They are both in the same building and both towers seem to be on the same power grid? Then the Joplin viewers have to turn to the Pittsburg stations to get weather information until Nexstar gets back up. Do you ever wonder why KOAM-TV ratings are much higher than Joplin's, this is just one example. BTW, Direct TV today added to Joplin subscribers (you must have a hd box) our local channels, as they say. Actually as of this post its only KSN/KODE and KOZJ. I contacted them and stated they forgot to include KOAM and KFJX. There response was something like, they go by zipcode and DMA (Designated Market Area). I guess they think the Pittsburg stations are not in the same DMA as Joplin? One more reason not to have DTV.

I work around the advertising business. Both KODE and KSN have been proporting, including sending DVD's of their newscasts to clients, that their new sets will make them the pre-eminent choice for news in the market. Since they both launched their new sets going into to May Ratings window, does anyone actually have audience results from May? I know this blog usually shows those results when they are out. Sarah Palin said, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig. I just am wondering if this is true with the Nexstar, KODE/KSN, claims, including the national posturing, of Nexstar.

It appears that KOAM is doing something with a new set. Since the new set at KODE and KSN did nothing for their viewership levels, the move by KOAM might be a waste of time. On the slim chance that a new set and presentation is a good thing, KODE and KSN might have been better off to leave the lounging giant alone rather than provoke a far better news organization (according to the numbers) with bold comments of our set is better than yours. Didn't this happen with the whole Doppler Deal?
