A community has lost a voice, a newspaper has lost its institutional memory and I’ve lost a shining example of journalism at its best.
Marvin VanGilder is dead. His passing doesn’t come as a surprise — he’s been in poor health for years — but the realization of the loss is still a shock and a blow.
I’m glad I’ve had a few years here at the end of his life to get to know this man who covered Carthage and Jasper County for more than half a century.

Someday someone will say the same thing about John Hacker.
VanGilder was a class act. And so is Hacker.
