Nodler, Goodman criticize Missouri Right to Life for Long endorsement

Today's Joplin Globe features a thorough examination by reporter Andy Ostmeyer of Missouri Right to Life's endorsement of Springfield auctioneer Billy Long in the Seventh District Congressional race.

The other two leading candidates in the race, Sen. Gary Nodler, R-Joplin, and Sen. Jack Goodman, R-Mount Vernon, take issue with that endorsement:

(Nodler) said Missouri Right to Life is “lying” about his record, called the group “dishonest” and disparaged it by adding: “If I was a candidate endorsed by them, I don’t know that I’d market it.”

If Nodler were endorsed by MRL, he would be scrambling trying to figure out how to make the most of it. Sounds like a sound byte from a bitter candidate. I would expect more out of Missourians.

Why, how could MRL select one of eight?

Mike Moon, Christian, active in High Street Baptist Church, pro-life, family man with strong family values.

Jeff Wisdom, pro-life, veteran and actve in Navy Reserve, strong conservative values.

Jack Goodman, Christian, active in church with his wife and two young sons, voting record for pro-life issues.

Gary Nodler, Christian, active in his church since early Seventies,pro-life,active in LifeChoices Pregnancy Center, voting record supports the rights of the unborn.

Darrell Moore, Christian, active in his church, pro-life, has legally protected the rights of the unborn.

Billy Long, family man, pro-life, with no voting record of supporting pro-life issues.

Dave Plemmons, Regional Organizer for Missouri Right to Life (MRL), dedicated to missrepresenting the positions of many people who are pro-life, Christians who have worked for the rights of the unborn for years, but not in the confinds of the misguided Missouri Right to Life group.

MRL has rapidly sunk to the point of no longer being the leading voice for the pro-life supporters in Missouri.

The MRL gave higher ratings to Pro-choice legislators who are FOR publically funded abortions over pro-life legislators. What kind of pro-life organizations does that? One run by democrats. Why would they endorse Long? Democrats.

    From The Turner Report

In his latest report, Sen. Gary Nodler, R-Joplin, a candidate for Seventh District Congress, responds to Missouri Right to Life's endorsement of his opponent, Billy Long, by stressing his own record in the state legislature:

An overwhelming majority of Missourians consistently and resoundingly place the gift of life above all other matters. Around family dinner tables, at lunch counters and at the polls, the view that life is bestowed by the Almighty and not a “choice” to be considered has been clearly expressed for generations. Protecting the lives of the unborn has been an ongoing effort for me throughout the time I have served in the Missouri Senate, and the work that was accomplished during my eight years as a state senator has reduced the number of abortions being performed in this state.

More than 30 years after the Roe v. Wade decision that effectively legalized abortion in the U.S., legislative and educational efforts are decreasing the number of abortions in our state. One of our main ways of accomplishing this is making sure that women who are making this decision are educated. In 2003, our work began by passing legislation that requires a 24-hour waiting period before an abortion can be performed to provide an opportunity to consider the gravity of the decision to abort a child. This year, we expanded on this law by requiring that a woman receives additional information including details on the emotional and physical risks of the procedure, information on the gestational age of her unborn child at the time the abortion is to be performed, and the opportunity to view, at least 24 hours prior to an abortion, an active ultrasound and hear the heartbeat of the unborn child.

In 2005, we passed an important pro-life measure during a special session. The law protects the safety of young women and the lives of the unborn by permitting lawsuits to be filed against people who help minors cross state lines to receive abortions. The measure is designed to support Missouri’s law requiring anyone under age 18 to have parental consent before receiving an abortion.

We again worked to protect life in 2007 when we passed legislation that prohibits abortion-providing or abortion referral organizations from conducting sex education courses in public schools. These entities bring an obvious and largely unaccepted bias into the classroom that simply isn’t helpful to building the futures of our schoolchildren. The bill also established the Missouri Alternatives to Abortion Services Program, which provides services and counseling to pregnant women as well as assistance to new mothers caring for their children or placing children up for adoption. The program also has an awareness component in which state agencies publicize alternatives to abortion.

Since 2003, we have worked to tighten restrictions on abortions performed in this state, educate women on the true nature of an abortion, and make sure that women are provided with easily accessible alternatives to abortion. I am proud of the work that was accomplished to save lives in this state.

This is a shocking endorsement. Goodman and Nodler both have strong conservative records and all that Billy has is sound bites and bumperstickers. How can someone with NO voting record receive an endorsement? Those pro-life democrats at MRL are using their endorsement to help a democrat help get elected to this seat.

Nodler and Goodman have about eight years each of work in state government guarding against spending abuses to support cloning and embryonic stem cell research, and to strengtherm attempts to reduce abortions.

My pastor spoke in several sermons about the concerns of Amendment 2 and the need for the General Assembly to be watchful in the future.

Mr. Long gave a few minutes of his time to talk about Amendment 2, sosmetime in 2006. (Is their proof of this claim?)

If Missouri Right to Life was not going to endorse Mr. Nodler and Mr. Goodman, or the other 10 or 11 prolife candidates seeking the seat of U.S. Congressman, they should have endorsed my pastor.

And they are justified in doing so. When MRL takes a stand based on money and not principle, they are no longer fit to be a spokesman for anything or anybody.

The talk at the Senior Center in Republic this morning was that Mr. Plemmons, a neighbor, was more interested in being a power broker than a pro-life advocate.

It's because Nodler and Goodman voted to build buildings that Plemmons thinks someday may perform a (legal) activity such as research on embryos.

I say highway spending is next. God forbid we build highways that allow people to travel to places that allow such research. Anyone who votes to build a road must support embryonic research as well!

    Great logic Plemmons, great logic.
