Senator Jane Cunningham, R-Chesterfield, today applauded Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster for defending Proposition C and for filing an amicus brief in the State of Florida v. United States Department of Health and Human Services. The lawsuit seeks to abolish the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.”
“I sincerely thank our attorney general for his step forward in defending citizens’ rights and freedoms and confronting federally mandated health care,” Sen. Cunningham said. “I discussed federal health care and Prop C with Greater St. Louis Society of Radiologists last week, and I mentioned that I was hopeful he would take action against federal health care mandates.”
Proposition C was an initiative that would prevent the federal government from mandating citizens to purchase health insurance, and would prohibit punishment for people who don’t have insurance. Proposition C was approved at the polls by more than 71 percent in August 2010.
“Requiring citizens to purchase a product they do not want is clearly unconstitutional, and citizens made their opinions known at the polls last August. Our attorney general is doing his job by defending the citizens of Missouri, and I hope we will soon be in the ranks to battle federal health care.”
Senator Cunningham introduced Senate Resolution 27 in January, which urged the Missouri Attorney General to join the federal health reform act by joining the federal lawsuit, file an independent lawsuit, or join Lt. Governor Kinder's lawsuit. The Senate Resolution was adopted that same month.
