Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4), a co-sponsor of “The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” is celebrating U.S. House approval of this government-wide permanent prohibition on funding for elective abortions and insurance coverage that includes elective abortion.
“Taxpayers should not have to fund abortion,” said Hartzler. “This legislation will not only put an end to that objectionable practice of government-funding for abortion, it would also close abortion-funding loopholes brought about by last year’s government health care law and would prohibit tax-preferred status for abortion through health savings accounts and itemized deductions. In addition, the bill prohibits abortion in federal health facilities, such as VA hospitals, and ensures health providers’ rights of conscience are protected. This protects them against punitive actions should they refuse to aid in performing abortions.”
Prior to the House vote on the bill, Hartzler addressed a press conference in the U.S. Capitol:
"I came here to make our government more efficient, more effective and to use our tax dollars more wisely and uphold the Constitution and I think this bill does all of those things,” Hartzler told reporters. “It's not controversial in my mind, it's common-sense!"
The legislation, which has been sent to the Senate, does not prohibit individuals, states, or localities from purchasing separate coverage that includes abortion.
