Rohr: Town hall meeting Monday night is an important one

The City of Joplin will host a Town Hall Meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 6 at the Taylor Performing Arts Center (3950 Newman Road) on the campus of Missouri Southern State University. This will be a great opportunity for storm-impacted residents to learn more about the debris removal process and temporary housing, as well as receive the Right of Entry form. In addition to City staff available to address questions, FEMA will have information areas also. All are welcome to attend.


“This is a very important meeting for residents affected by the tornado to attend, if their schedule allows,” said Mark Rohr, City Manager. “In addition, if they need transportation to the meetings, the City is running extra shuttles from the regularly scheduled Trolley stops to ensure our residents can get to this meeting. There is no charge for this service.”

If residents are not able to come to the Monday night meeting, the ROE will be available starting Tuesday, June 7 in the following locations throughout the community:

Carver Preschool (Ewert Park), 520 School Avenue; Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2616 South Connecticut;

Joplin Association for the Blind, 311 South Schifferdecker; Joplin Athletic Complex, 3010 West 1st Street;

Joplin City Hall , 602 South Main Street ; Joplin Senior Citizen Center, 2202 Jackson; Missouri Southern State University, 3950 E Newman Rd (L&P Center); North Middle School, South Entrance off Gray Street, 102 Gray; Northpark Mall, 101 North Rangeline.

As the community begins the tornado recovery, debris removal at the curbside has begun. Currently over 70 trucks are working through the disaster area picking up the separated piles left at the curb by residents. More trucks will become active in the near future once the full expedited debris removal process begins.

The City reminds all residents to retrieve any personal items they want to keep no later than June 15, using good judgment to ensure their personal safety. If they have personal items they can’t get to because of debris, they should consider hiring a contractor or utilizing volunteers to help.

As the work continues, residents and volunteers are reminded to use caution as they travel through the city. All pedestrian and vehicles should be specifically alert as they move through the tornado stricken area given the magnitude of the debris and the large number of trucks that will be a part of our clean-up efforts.
