Burning ban lifted, ban still in place for tornado debris

(From the City of Joplin)

The burn ban for the City of Joplin has been lifted. The area has received minimally sufficient precipitation within the past few days and more is forecast in the near future.

The burning of tornado-related debris or construction waste is still prohibited. If this occurs, the Fire Department will immediately extinguish the fire, and the individual(s) will face fines for their actions.

Permits are required for burning and will be issued only on the days burning is allowed by the Joplin Fire Department. Permits are typically issued when winds are expected to be less than 15 MPH and it is not raining or humid enough to keep smoke at ground levels and cause smoldering. Burning is required to be conducted in accordance with all City ordinances and Fire Codes or permits may be revoked.

If dry conditions return, the public is encouraged to contact their nearest Fire Station or Station 1 at 623-0403 to determine if permits will be issued.

An environmentally friendly and free alternative to burning is available to City of Joplin residents through the City’s Recycling programs. Grass clippings and leaves may be taken to the compost facility, located next to the Turkey Creek Waste Water Treatment Plant, 6457 Eddy Lane. This free drop-off location is just west of the intersection of Eddy and North Peace Church Avenue, and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The yard wastes will be converted to compost for various uses and applications.

For more information, contact the Joplin Fire Department at 623-0403 ext. 1307.
