Commissioner of Education Chris L. Nicastro will join educators, policymakers, elected officials and other engaged citizens at the second annual Education Nation Summit, Sept. 25-27, at Rockefeller Center in New York City. Hosted by NBC News, Education Nation is an ‘initiative to engage the country in a solutions-focused conversation about the state of education in America.’
The summit provides a forum for educators to brainstorm ideas and discuss challenges and solutions for the education system. A variety of events will be held including a teacher town hall, panel discussions and the world premier of a documentary titled “American Teacher,” which illustrates the day-to-day lives of teachers working in urban and rural settings across the nation.
“This national gathering will certainly generate a comprehensive and enthusiastic conversation about education in America,” Nicastro said. “I will be participating on behalf of public education in Missouri and the nearly 1 million students we serve.”
NBC News will feature education topics and events throughout the week. On Sunday, a Teacher Town Hall will be televised live nationally at 11:00 a.m. (Central Time). Thousands of teachers are expected to participate online, along with hundreds of teachers on-site in New York. In addition, President Obama will deliver his third annual Back-to-School Speech to students across the country on Wednesday afternoon.
A number of speakers and panelists on the summit agenda include: Secretary Arne Duncan, U.S. Department of Education; Dennis Van Roekel, National Education Association; Wendy Kopp, Teach for America; and former President Bill Clinton.
