In her latest message to supporters, Rep. Stacey Newman, D-St. Louis, says the recent debate, or lack of debate, on birth control in the Missouri House and Speaker of the House Steve Tilley's decision to put Rush Limbaugh into the Hall of Famous Missourians are indications that the war on women is well underway.
After being “silenced” and not allowed to speak during a 3 hour debate on birth control on the House floor, I recently filed a bill limiting men’s access to vasectomies. HB1853 would place the same government oversight to men that the Missouri legislature routinely places on women’s on private reproductive health decisions.
In the past two weeks since Rush Limbaugh mentioned my bill on air, I’ve had an overwhelming response from women and men - not only in Missouri, but all over the country, even Canada! As my efforts spread via national media, voters are thanking me for standing up to the constant barrage of anti-women bills that we consistently debate in committee or on the House floor.
I am just as committed to pushing back against “voter suppression” efforts in Missouri.
Unconstitutional voter ID bills are filed each year even though over 250,000 current Missouri voters – the elderly, disabled, working poor, students, women & minorities of color would be suppressed. This has become a nationwide effort since November 2008 but why? These groups simply don’t “vote right”. They also cite that pesky myth of “voter fraud” from machine gun gangster days of 1936 – the only documented case the GOP can find.
AND to top it all off, Speaker Steven Tilley wants to honor Rush Limbaugh by adding his bust in the State Capitol – regardless of the radio host’s recent sexist inflammatory tirades. The anti-woman/anti-minority sentiment is prevalent throughout the legislature and I’m beyond outraged.
In addition to these fights, I serve on the new statewide Task Force for the Prevention of Sexual Abuse of Children and am advancing legislation to create a new Equal Pay Commission, working closely with Attorney General Chris Koster (which passed unanimously out of commmittee).
I need your help to continue being vocal as I face re-election in 2012. I fully expect opponents in the primary August 7 and in the general election November 6. Neither will stop me.
GOP bills are becoming more and more outrageous and extreme. The flat-out attack on access to birth control and voting rights is clearly insulting to the mass majority. Those fights happened over 50 years ago and don’t we have more important issues facing us today?
You can help me, as the House Progressive Caucus chair, keep fighting this insanity and continue working for real progress. We are in a shameless season of intolerance – enough is enough.
Your $25, $50, $100 or even $250 will help me remain in the legislature.

I need you to help me continue my voice on behalf of justice and equality – in the workplace, the voting booth and particularly for women and families throughout the state.
I refuse to sit idly by.
Wait. She said that we have more important things to debate than "access" to birth control, but she is one of the only people still bringing it up. And to say that voter fraud hasn't been a problem since the 30s is just a flat out lie. There was a guy just two or three weeks ago who was getting ballots at poling places for people who are no longer alive. Does she not read the news? What about when ACORN people registered the whole Dallas Cowboys team in one district? She didn't hear about that news either? Voter ID would prevent that kind of fraud. It's BS to say there are people who can't get a state ID if they want one. They need one to gamble and to drink and to get state and federal benefits and to get on planes and to drive and to buy things at stores with credit cards and to get credit and to write checks and to go to the doctor and to get their prescriptions filled and etc.
ReplyDeleteShe should expect candidates to file against her in her own party for the Primary Election and a boatload of candidates in the opposition party. She is low-hanging fruit.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you 1:19; she brings up non-issues to rally support for non-issues. She's gotta be being coached by Claire.

This should help you understand where Representative Newman is coming from.
ReplyDeleteThe Executive Summary is simple. She is a political hack.
Representative Stacey Newman, a Democrat, represents parts of St. Louis County (District 73) including the municipalities of Clayton, Richmond Heights, Maplewood and smaller portions of Brentwood and Webster Groves, elected in a special election in November of 2009.
Prior to being elected, Newman was employed as a political consultant. She served as a founder and the executive director of Harriett’s List, a statewide political action committee honoring the legacy of Harriett Woods, former Missouri Lt. Governor. Previously she served as the executive director of the Missouri Women’s Coalition and the women’s vote director for both the Missouri Democratic Party and Democratic National Committee.
She was a stewardess, or peanut passer, for TWA from 1979 to 1992.
Newman has served on the board of directors of PROMO PAC, the statewide equality group; the Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies, University of Missouri – St. Louis; Missouri Progressive Vote Coalition; the National Women’s Political Caucus of Metropolitan St. Louis; Central Reform Congregation and Congregation Temple Israel. She is a member of the National Women’s Legislative Lobby.
