Dave Spence, Republican candidate for governor, today announced that his campaign raised over $840,000 in monetary and in-kind contributions during the first quarter of 2012. That brings Spence’s fundraising total to over $3 million since entering the race in November. Spence has $1.7 million cash on hand after paying for his substantial statewide television advertising.
“With our fundraising success across the state and our candidate’s commitment to winning, we are confident that the campaign will have the resources we need to get Dave’s positive, pro-jobs message out to the voters,” said Spence Campaign Manager Jared Craighead. “In contrast, Jay Nixon has shown that he will veto pro-jobs legislation and rig taxpayer-funded state contracts to pad his campaign account with pay-to-play contributions from liberal trial lawyers, union bosses, and unscrupulous lobbyists.”
$500,000 of Governor Nixon’s total came in from the Democratic Governor’s Association (DGA), showing early concern for an incumbent. Additionally, Nixon has come under fire in recent weeks for his questionable pay-to-play fundraising tactics. He vetoed two bills opposed by liberal trial lawyers that have donated over $1.8 million to his re-election campaign. He was sued for allegedly rigging a Medicaid contract to the benefit of a major campaign contributor. His Missouri Democrat Party received illegal contributions which were intended for his benefit and led to the indictment of a former governor. And a DGA front group began running pro-Nixon ads funded by hundreds of thousands of dollars in secret donations.
“Unlike Governor Nixon, Dave Spence can honestly say that getting our economy back on track is his top priority and that he is beholden to no one other than the people of Missouri,” added Craighead.
