City Manager Mark Rohr is speaking at the Day of Unity Rally at Cunningham Park in Joplin. A moment of silence will be held at 5:41 p.m., marking the exact moment to the day one year ago that the tornado ripped through this community.
A plaque carrying the names of the 161 people who lost their lives in the tornado will be unveiled shortly. One hundred sixty-one trees have been planted in Cunningham Park in their memory.
The service is being held at the end of a complete Day of Unity in which an estimated six thousand to eight thousand people walked the path the tornado took one year ago. The path included stops at Joplin High School and the site of the new Irving Elementary for groundbreaking ceremonies.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held earlier today at East Middle School just east of Duquesne.
