Grant will significantly increase Americorps' presence in Joplin

(From Seventh District Congressman Billy Long)

U.S. Rep. Billy Long (MO-7) will join Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) CEO Wendy Spencer and community leaders to announce a major three-year AmeriCorps grant to support rebuilding efforts in Joplin.

The grant will significantly increase AmeriCorps’ presence in Joplin and represents a long-term commitment by AmeriCorps and its parent agency CNCS to support the people of Joplin in the rebuilding process.

Since the first team of AmeriCorps members arrived in Joplin just hours after the tornado struck, more than 350 AmeriCorps members from across the country have traveled to Joplin, providing vital services and coordinating more than 75,000 volunteers.  More than two dozen AmeriCorps members are still serving, and the new grant will more than double AmeriCorps presence.

The announcement will take place at the residence of a disabled veteran whose home has been repaired by volunteers and AmeriCorps members.   Press are invited to attend.
