Peggy Newton sentencing hearing reset to July 30

The sentencing of Joplin businesswoman Peggy Newton, who pleaded guilty last year to fraud has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, July 30, in Springfield, according to a notice filed today in U. S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri.

The sentencing had been scheduled for Monday, but was pushed back after a 45-minutes meeting between the judge, government lawyers, and the lawyer for Mrs. Newton.

The government plans to put witnesses on the stand to back its contention that Mrs. Newton should spend at least five years in prison, while Mrs. Newton's lawyers are seeking probation or a sentence of less than a year.

Information about the sentencing memorandum the government filed to back its request for a longer sentence can be found at this link.
