Heat advisory for Joplin area extended through Tuesday night

HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM CDT TUESDAY...

* SHORT TERM TRENDS...MID MORNING TEMPERATURES HAD WARMED INTO THE
UPPER 80S TO THE LOW 90S ACROSS THE REGION. TEMPERATURES WILL
CONTINUE TO WARM TODAY...EVENTUALLY REACHING THE UPPER 90S AND
LOW 100S BY MID TO LATE AFTERNOON. 

* TIMING AND AREAS AFFECTED...THROUGH TUESDAY AFTERNOON FOR AREAS ALONG
AND WEST OF A NEVADA TO SPRINGFIELD TO BRANSON MISSOURI LINE.

* TEMPERATURE...TEMPERATURES AND HEAT INDEX VALUES WILL CLIMB TO
100 TO 107 DEGREES EACH AFTERNOON. ISOLATED SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE EACH AFTERNOON...WHICH MAY
PROVIDE SOME LOCALIZED RELIEF...HOWEVER THIS ACTIVITY WILL BE
HIT AND MISS NOT AFFECTING EVERYONE.

* IMPACTS...AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF VERY WARM TEMPERATURES WILL INCREASE
THE RISK OF HEAT RELATED ILLNESSES. YOUNG CHILDREN... THE
ELDERLY...AND THOSE WITHOUT ACCESS TO AIR CONDITIONING WILL BE
PARTICULARLY SUSCEPTIBLE.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS
EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY
WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE
POSSIBLE.

TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN
POSSIBLE...RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR
EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT
STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN
POSSIBLE AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.
