Humphreys cash gives Ed Emery big advantage in Senate fundraising

There was a time when the $67,030 Rep. Scott Largent, R-Clinton, raised during the second quarter would have been a formidable amount, but the money from one family enabled Largent's opponent in the state senate primary, former Rep. Ed Emery, R-Lamar, to have a substantial fundraising advantage.

Documents filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission last week show Emery received $100,000 from the Humphreys family of Joplin, owners of TAMKO, with Ethelmae Humphreys and her son David each contributing $50,000. Add to that another $40,000 from Missouri Club for Growth, which is almost completely financed by retired billionaire Rex Sinquefield and Emery was well on his way to $150,039.16.

Largent's financial disclosure statement filed Sunday with the Ethics Commission, showed Noranda Alumninum as his largest contributot with $10,000. The second largest contributor is the man who beat Ed Emery in the State Senate primary two years ago, Sen. Mike Parson, R-Bolivar.

Coming in third at $6,000 is Sen. Ron Richard, R-Joplin.

Largent also received contributions ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 from various insurance, Chamber of Commerce, insurance, realtors, and other special interests.
