Excessive heat warning for Joplin area through 8 p.m. Friday

...EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM CDT FRIDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SPRINGFIELD HAS ISSUED AN
EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM CDT
FRIDAY. THE HEAT ADVISORY IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT. 

* SHORT TERM TRENDS...TEMPERATURES WILL RANGE FROM 102 TO 108
THROUGH LATE AFTERNOON THEN SLOWLY COOL INTO THE 90S AFTER
SUNSET. 

* TIMING AND AREAS AFFECTED...VERY HOT TEMPERATURES WILL CONTINUE
INTO FRIDAY ACROSS EXTREME SOUTHEASTERN KANSAS AND FAR
SOUTHWESTERN MISSOURI. 

* TEMPERATURE...AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES WILL RANGE FROM 102 TO 108
DEGREES WITH OVERNIGHT LOWS ONLY FALLING TO NEAR 80. 

* IMPACTS...THIS EXTENDED PERIOD OF HOT WEATHER WILL LIKELY INCREASE
THE RISK OF HEAT RELATED ILLNESSES. YOUNG CHILDREN... THE
ELDERLY...AND THOSE WITHOUT ACCESS TO AIR CONDITIONING WILL BE
PARTICULARLY SUSCEPTIBLE.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING MEANS THAT A PROLONGED PERIOD OF
DANGEROUSLY HOT TEMPERATURES WILL OCCUR. THE COMBINATION OF HOT
TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A DANGEROUS
SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE LIKELY.

TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK...THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND
HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS
IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY HEAT
SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE IS AN
EMERGENCY...CALL 9 1 1.
