Planned Parenthood Ad- Todd Akin: too dangerous

(From Planned Parenthood of Missouri)

Planned Parenthood Votes is rolling out its first on-line ad in Missouri as part of the organization’s campaign to reach women voters in the St. Louis and Kansas City area. “Parking Garage” features a lone car in a parking lot at night with the sound of a woman’s heels clicking in the background, creating imagery surrounding the policy that “Akin would deny survivors of rape and incest access to emergency contraception.”

Beginning earlier this week, and airing through the election, the online ad highlights the extreme views of Todd Akin, focusing on the real-life impact of his policies rather than his outrageous statements. The ad is part of a combined $300,000 campaign that features: direct mail, phone, canvassing and public education events featuring Pillamina – the human birth control pack.
Polling has found that an overwhelming majority of women voters trust Planned Parenthood Action Fund (the national 501c4, and its affiliated PAC, Planned Parenthood Votes) when it comes to issues affecting the health of women and teens in America.  Women surveyed place a premium on Planned Parenthood Action Fund's voice in understanding important health care-related issues.
In addition to the US Senate race, the campaign in Missouri is focused on the state senate, supporting two candidates, Scott Sifton SD1 in St. Louis and Mary Still SD19 in Columbia. Both candidates would bring unwavering support for women’s health.
This election comes on the heels of the Missouri Legislature’s override of Governor Nixon’s veto of the Birth Control Refusal bill allowing employers and insurers to take away insurance coverage for birth control.  The campaign is highlighting this incredibly unpopular vote in the mail and phone communications.
Fourteen Planned Parenthood health centers in Missouri serve 70,000 Missourians a year providing them with a wide range of preventive health care services including; lifesaving cancer screenings, birth control, emergency contraception, STD/HIV testing and treatment. It is these preventive services that would be threatened under a Romney/Ryan administration.
Nearly three million patients visit Planned Parenthood health centers every year — not to make a political statement, but to get high-quality, affordable health care.  Preventive care and birth control are economic issues for women and families. Supporting family planning is smart fiscal policy for the country.
