Joplin area legislators co-sponsor bill allowing teachers to carry guns

The madness continues in Jefferson City.

Two days ago, I wrote about HB 70, sponsored by Rep. Mike Kelley, R-Lamar, which would allow school teachers and administrators to carry guns.

The text of the bill has now been posted on the House website and the Kelley bill's 24 co-sponsors include three Joplin area legislators- Rep. Bill Lant, R-Joplin, Rep. Bill Reiboldt, R-Neosho, and Rep. Charlie Davis, R-Webb City. Another co-sponsor is Rep. John McCaherty, R-High Ridge, who last year raised campaign money by raffling off an AR-15.

Note: Kelley's bill also applies to teachers and administrators at colleges and universities in the state.

In lockstep they march to the beat of the NRA's drums,
Chanting, "To protect our kids we need more guns, guns, guns!"

I'd rather have a capable teacher or staff person with a CCW permit; trained and prepared to immediately remove threats to my kids than wait for law enforcement to arrive. My kids should not have to depend upon you to protect them if you chose not to do so.

I do not like this legislative proposal, nor do I like the times we are living in. Which is the greater evil?

I think the fear here comes from ignorance. To obtain a CCW permit you have to go through training, and pass a rigorous background check. Also, if a teacher does not want to pay and go through the process they don’t have to.

Another misconception is that a Concealed Carry permit will put the gun on the teacher’s hip just outside the waste band. Concealed Carry is just that, concealed. Chances are you would never know if a teacher in your school Conceal carried unless they told you.

I have heard teachers say things like it would make teachers want to use their gun if their students were acting up…if you have this mentality you probably chose the wrong profession and need to seek psychological help immediately. Metal and polymer hold no magical control over its possessor.

I hope people do their research on the subject before having knee jerk reactions that keep our schools a target for those who ignore the laws. I think if criminals and psychopaths thought there was a chance of a teacher in the building having a gun, even if none did, they would avoid using that school as a target.

Thats great! Our kids will be safer. Can't stop an armed criminal with your body, I think this was recently proven, you need a gun in a gun fight.
