Winter storm warning for Joplin area

WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 PM CST THURSDAY...
A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR SNOW... SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 PM CST THURSDAY.
* TIMING AND AREAS AFFECTED... SNOW AND SLEET WILL OVERSPREAD SOUTHEASTERN KANSAS AND SOUTHWESTERN MISSOURI THIS EVENING AND CONTINUE OVERNIGHT. A MIX OF WINTER PRECIPITATION WILL CONTINUE MUCH OF THURSDAY BEFORE ENDING FROM THE WEST.
* SNOW AND SLEET ACCUMULATIONS... AROUND A HALF INCH UP TO 2 INCHES OF SNOW AND SLEET CAN BE EXPECTED. LOCALLY HIGHER SNOW ACCUMULATIONS AROUND 3 INCHES WILL BE POSSIBLE ESPECIALLY ACROSS CENTRAL MISSOURI NORTH OF HIGHWAY 54. SIGNIFICANT SLEET ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED.
* ICE ACCUMULATIONS... AROUND A TENTH TO AROUND ONE QUARTER OF AN INCH OF ICE ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED. THE HIGHER ACCUMULATIONS WILL OCCUR ALONG AND SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 60 WHERE LOCALLY HIGHER ICE ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE POSSIBLE.
* WINDS AND VISIBILITY... EASTERLY TO SOUTHEASTERLY WINDS OF 15 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS AROUND 30 MPH WILL OCCUR LATE TONIGHT AND THURSDAY.
* IMPACTS... THE WINTRY MIX WILL IMPACT TRAVEL AS EARLY AS THIS EVENING WITH DETERIORATING TRAVEL CONDITIONS LATE TONIGHT AND THURSDAY MORNING. TRAVEL COULD BECOME TREACHEROUS DURING THE MORNING COMMUTE.
FREEZING RAIN WILL ACCUMULATE ON ELEVATED OBJECTS INCLUDING TREES AND POWER LINES. DAMAGE TO TREES AND POWER LINES COULD OCCUR IF HIGHER ICE ACCUMULATIONS MATERIALIZE.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW... SLEET... AND ICE ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. STRONG WINDS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE. THIS WILL MAKE TRAVEL VERY HAZARDOUS OR IMPOSSIBLE. CONSIDER TAKING A WINTER STORM KIT ALONG WITH YOU. THIS KIT SHOULD INCLUDE SUCH ITEMS AS TIRE CHAINS... BOOSTER CABLES... A FLASHLIGHT... SHOVEL... BLANKETS... EXTRA CLOTHING AND ANYTHING ELSE THAT WOULD HELP YOU SURVIVE IN CASE YOU BECOME STRANDED.
