Schweich: Fee office audits to examine use of documents.

GOP senators are asking Missouri State Auditor Thomas Schweich to audit the Department of Revenue  to check on the sharing of documents with the federal government (primarily concealed we. Schweich says he is planning to audit more license fee offices and will make sure he checks on how documents are being handled.

His letter to Sen. Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia, included the following:

My office has been watching intently the media reports and action taken by the members of the House and Senate in regards to the Missouri Department of Revenue's position and comments relating to scanning source documents to obtain a Missouri driver's license. In addition, my office has started to look into the issue and gather information to be used in upcoming audits.

As you may recall my office completed ten (10) contract license office audits in 2012 and at that time the new scanners and computer equipment had not yet been installed. Our audits evaluated the internal controls related to the handling of various fee and tax transactions and also the office's compliance with certain contractual and statutory provisions.

My office was already planning to audit five (5) more contract license offices in 2013 and perform follow up work on certain audit findings contained in Report No. 2012-28, Contract License Offices Bidding and Procurement, issued in April 2012. We will make it a priority during these audits to investigate concerns related to scanning source documents.
