Seventy attend Common Core Standards meeting at Neosho

The Neosho Daily News is reporting that 70 people attended an informational meeting about the upcoming implementation of Common Core Standards.

The meeting came about a month after nearly 150 people attended a similar meeting at East Newton High School.

Neosho's new superintendent Dan Decker did not indicate whether he was in favor of Common Core Standards, according to the article, but said they are coming and teachers and students need to be prepared.

Students will begin taking the new Common Core standardized tests in the spring of 2015, Decker said. 

“The knowledge that they had to have to score advanced in math under the MAPS test will only get them proficiency on the Smarter Balanced Assessment,” Decker said. “And so, whether we 100 percent agree with it or not, or like it or not, we have to prepare our kids to be able to have success, because if we don’t, we’re going to fail them.”
