Audio- Besendorfer three days after tornado- Funnel clouds have silver linings

Less than three days after the Joplin Tornado, at least one Joplin R-8 administrator was already to spend millions of dollars to make her ideal school a reality.

An audio recording of a May 25, 2011, meeting at what is now the Joplin High School 9-10 Center obtained by the Turner Report and Inside Joplin shows that Assistant Superintendent Angie Besendorfer was already prepared to spend the $1 million plus needed to buy laptops for every Joplin High School student, though this was weeks before the United Arab Emirates made its $500,000 pledge, with a promise to make it one million once the district was able to match the pledge.

"Let's do the 1 to 1," Besendorfer told teachers who had come to the building for an update about their school district and their jobs.

Whatever you want, Besendorfer told those who were jam packed into the room (two meetings had to be held that afternoon), you will be able to get because of the tornado.

It was at that point where the assistant superintendent used an early version of the phrase she has continued to use since that time.

The district was able to find "lots of silver linings," she said. "tornado clouds, funnel clouds have silver linings."

Though the teachers and students might find themselves in buildings that are not ideal since theirs were destroyed by the tornado, Besendorfer said, "while we build the ideal school."

Besendorfer's statement came approximately 68 hours after 161 people had been killed by the EF-5 tornado, the most devastating tornado to hit the United States in six decades. It was made at a meeting where a number of the teachers (including this one) were hunched over their laptops trying to locate students through Facebook to make sure they and their families were all right.

The statement came only a few moments after Besendorfer told teachers to make sure to notify the administration about any funerals that were to take place.

She had an amazing ability to see through the trauma and look toward the future. This article here just made me a Besendorfer fan!! Thank goodness she was here when we needed her, I couldn't see past the end of the week on that particular day and she could see Joplin not just repaired but improved.

All I can imagine is that 7:18 must have been fired and she blames Angie. There are other jobs. Holding onto rage and hatred only hurts you.

I think the point is that she was celebrating the possibilities before the funerals had even begun. Even a moron like 7:23 should recognize the insensitivity in that. We all knew schools would have to be built. But some conversations should be tempered or held for later. Those of us who lost loved ones and homes struggle to see that silver lining. Mostly, it was an opportunity in her eyes to advance her career. Unfortunately, her "dream" is hurting the district and will ultimately be her undoing.
All of you need to learn to think before you speak. I'm not fired. I'm just one of many who have been hurt by seeing what has been done to the district of my hometown.

What I remember about that first meeting 3 days after the tornado: "...do not talk to the press, the press are not our friends....if you do you will written up for insubordination or even fired...all information must come from us..."
    She lost my support then.

I like how 7:23 is pretending they just became a Besendorfer fan. For all I know 7:29 is the same person. Enjoy going down with the ship (glub glub).

I have several thoughts on this and they need to be made with the knowledge that I am NOT an Angie fan. 1-she is very smart and very good at seeing possibilities. 2-she is very creative. 3-she can work a crowd. 4-I was there and I don't think she was trying to be insensitive. 5-employees were told that about the media. 6-she can and does use anything to work toward her ultimate goal and that is whatever is '21st century' and will get her glory. What she really wanted was Huff's job but the tornado made him a hero so that couldn't happen.

If Angie is truly smart, then why are her millions of dollars in ideas not working? They would not have to stoop to all of this scheming and covering up if she had brains. Unfortunately, her creativity is limited to scheming and plotting, or the district wouldn't be in this mess. She may not have intended to be insensitive-she just IS insensitive. Heartless and cruel. Destroys peoples careers as easily as she destroys funding, morale, and progress. Not worth defending her. She needs to go.
