The Joplin R-8 Board of Education is expected to approve more than a quarter of a million dollars in spending when it meets in special session at 5:30 p.m. today at the Administration Building at 32nd and Duquesne.
The board will act on administration recommendations for restoring the warehouse building that was used as a temporary East Middle School, providing police resource officers for the district, and buying a new bus.
Administration is recommending the board accept the low bid of $157,940 from Sprouls Construction to restore the East Middle School warehouse building to its original condition as specified in the district's agreement with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce. The money will come from a "a combination of FEMA funding and 2013/2014 capital outlay," according to the board documentation. It does not specify how much will come from either source.
The board will also be asked to approve a "local grant partnership" with the City of Joplin to provide four school resource police officers at a cost of $76,997.27. According to the documentation, the officers are used to provide security and drug abuse prevention classes.
Also on the agenda is approval of an eco-friendly 71-passenger bus for $90,000. The purchase is being made with the partial help of a grant "to maintain the integrity of our fleet." As part of the deal, the district is required to destroy an "older, less efficient" bus and recycle its parts. The district will play $70,000 of the cost from the 2013-2014 capital outlay budget, according to the documentation.
The board will also meet in closed session with the agenda listing the usual list of all possible reasons it could go into session, legal issues, real estate, personnel, and identifiable student records.
First a Wi-Fi bus and now an eco bus? Way to go Joplin R-8! I hope you are all happy with this spending spree. Huff and everyone at the asylum...Keep up the good work!

ReplyDeleteLooks like your second draft was better. There is a delay on comment posts.
ReplyDeleteA quarter of a million is a drop in the R8 bucket. Unfortunately, they've poured out all but about 8% of the drops, and they can't get any more water out of the well.
